G. V. Chitnis, Mumbai|
was born on 20th May 1927 in Ahmadnagar district ofMaharastra. I had
an early influence of marxism and of the ideas of Sarve Guruji. I preferred
marxian ideas to the Gandhian ones. Even as a student, I thought something
should be done for others. At the time of India’s independence, I came into
contact with Dange, who put him to TU work. From TU office work I shifted to
mass work amoung the textile workers of Bombay. I became the general secretary
of the Girini Kamagar Union in 1971, and later was the general secretary
ofMaharastra TUC. I participated and had some memorable textile strikes e.g. of
1962 and 1974. I was physically attacked in the course of one of the strikes and
had to be hospitalised.
was on the ESI Corporation Review Committee of 1964-65, and on many other
committee. I was also on the committee to study the conditions of the workers
ofPowerloom and Handloom Industries.
