Com. Narayan Palekar, Madgaon, Goa|
was born on 23 July 1927 near Karwar (now in Dakshin Kannada). I was in contact
with the Royists at first and was in the Radical Humanist Party. It was the
famous and veteran freedom fighter of Goa,
Shri Syam Rao Madkaikar, who
brought me into politics. Yashwant Rao Chavan was among the prominent leaders of
the Royist party. I used to engage myself in underground activities like bomb
making etc. I was also later deeply
influenced by Ram Manohar Lohia, when he came to Goa in 1946. He addressed big
public meetings and I was attracted. Later on I joined the Goan People’s
basically began my trade union activities in Bombay where there was a large
number of Goan migrants. They had to go to Bombay during the Portugese rule in
order to escape the Portugese rulers and also
own organisations, rules and methods. There were Goan clubs to help the
migrant Goans, including their stay and food. I worked among them and organised
their first trade unions. While in Bombay ,1 took part in several other trade
unions also. I participated in the strike
and electricity supply
workers. During the strike, each of the leading activists had to look after at
least two families. Once I had to starve for fourteen daysat a stretch and slept
in burning ghats (Shamshan), parks etc.
I shifted to Belgaum. I worked in the trade unions connected with banks, flour
millsetc. I organised a huge satyagraha there with large participation of women.
I also worked among the workers of powerlooms, handlooms,
foundaries etc. I worked
actively in the Karnatak Dandeli industrial area/. Big strikes took place on the
issue of wages for strike period. I
also participated in the movement launched by plywood, paper, ferromagnetic
plants etc. There was a historic strike in the ferro-magnetc plant after three
workers were sacked. I convinced the shopkeepers
to continue supply of food or grains to the workers because it was on the latter
that the former was dependent. They
agreed. Workers cut the water
supply to the plant. Ultimately, the management had to give in to our demands. I
wa the vice president of the taxi drivers’ assocoation and orgaised their
strike in 1964. I also took part in the movement launched by ore and minig
workers union. I also organised the goldsmiths after 1963 Gold Control Order.
Later on I organised them into cooperatives producing gold atricles. Meawhile I
was involved in organising various other trade unions like those of fishermen,
electricity workers, fertilisers etc. I helped the workers of teh Zuari factory
who remained on strike for 15 days.
helped formation of Goa Trade and Commercial workers union and by this time got
involved in at least 200 unios. At
present I am president of Goa TUC.
have a union in Kadamba Transport also. Besides
I am associated with sugar mill workers, navigation, marine and hotel workers
union. I have actively participated in the various phases of the liberation
struggle of Goa and Nagar Haveli, from the clutches of the Portugese rulers.
