Integrated
Labour History Research Programme
The
Integrated Labour History Research Programme (ILHRP) was
instituted at the VVGNLI, on 24 July 1998.
The programme was set up in collaboration with the
Association of Indian Labour Historians (AILH) a body of
professional historians and scholars interested in history
of Labour.
The
overall aim of the ILHRP is to initiate, integrate and
revive historical research on labour in India and is the
first of its kind in the country. The programme has three
mutually reinforcing components:
-
Digital
Archives of Indian Labour;
-
Writing
Labour History of India
-
Interdisciplinary
Research.
Digital
Archives of Indian Labour is the core component of the
ILHRP. (Details pertaining to the Digital Archives has
been provided separately in this site: Please See: Digital
Archives).
The
second key component of the Programme is Writing Labour
History. This is an effort to synthesise research and
chart out new areas in labour history through research
contributions by leading scholars in the field. In its
first phase an “ Overview of Labour History in India
“- reputed specialists in the field with their
contributions have produced a collection of essays. In the
following phases this component will be enriched by the
research projects conducted by the Archives and will
incorporate periodically all written output of the
research programme.
The
research output emanating from the Research and Collection
projects feed into the Writing Labour History Programme.
In the first phase essays on ten key themes on labour have
been completed and are being readied for publication as
working papers of the ILHRP. Apart from these regular
seminars and discussions are held every month and
distinguished scholars of national and international
repute have regularly delivered seminars under the
programme. The dissemination research through specialised
workshops, international and national conferences have
been held under the aegis of the programme. In addition
joint collaborative projects are carried out with
institutions and individuals on themes of mutual interest.
This
third component of the ILHRP, interdisciplinary research
aims to integrate labour history concerns with that of
research in the other social sciences carried out in the
VVGNLI and elsewhere. This component also allows for
integration of contemporary and historical concerns in the
field of labour studies and diffusion of the results
through regular seminars and conferences.
